How to Change a Ceiling Light
Are you tired of looking at the same old dull light frame that is in your rooms, or is your light fixture old and giving you problems and you wan to to change it for a more modern one? Here is how you can change your unwanted dimmed light or your already burnt out light in your room.
The first thing you need to do it turn off the power to the light at the main circuit breaker or fuse box. You can turn off only the switch to that one room if you can to change the light. Then remove all the screws that are securing it to the ceiling, use a screwdriver and gold the fixture from the bottom as you work. Then lower the light fixture a few inches until you can see the wires, then unscrew the wire nuts that are connecting the wires that are coming out of the wall. Remove half an inch of insulation from the wire ends of the new fixture with a wire stripper.
Then you should lift the fixture into place,and using wire nuts, splice together the new fixture's neutral white or gray wires and the incoming neutral wires, and the fixture's and incoming hot wires, any color except green, white or gray. Join the fixture to the grounding wires in the box if it also has a grounding wire which is the green or bare copper.
Then, tug on the wires to make sure all the connections are secure, and if they are then tuck the wires into the ceiling box and screw on the new light. If the new light's mounting holes do not match up with those of the old one, you may have to drill new holes. Then turn the power back on at the main circuit breaker or fuse box and see if it works.
Here are some tips: to make sure you shut off the proper circuit before working on the fixture, turn on the old light before shutting off power to the circuit. If the light is still on after you remove a fuse or switch off the circuit breaker, you've shut off the wrong circuit.
Also it is a good idea to indicate with a note on the breaker box that you are working with the electrical system, so that other people will know and not turn on the circuit while you are working.
